So... in addition to working on air for Golf Channel and following the weekly/daily Tiger Woods saga (which isn't easy), I've been trying to figure out the Brett Favre situation.
Are the Vikings insane to put themselves through this every year? C'mon.. this is crazy. Imagine being a fan of the team, a quarterback on the team or the General Manager and Coach of the team.
At HTK MEDIA.. we're working to teach athletes and executives that the media is an "opportunity" and not an "obligation." You appreciate the chance to talk with the press and deliver the message you'd like to get across. In Favre's case.. he comes across like he's obligated.. yet he's the one driving the bus on this thing. Had he come out three months ago and said "I'm playing if I'm healthy and I should know the answer by August 1st," then maybe all this doesn't happen. Now he's having to defend himself over text messages that he allegedly sent to Viking players. And he's put himself in a terrible light with teammates, fans and media members who are now stuck with the story that they need to stay on top of.
At some point.. teams need to take more control. Step up and make a statement to the media that sounds like they know what's going on. We teach executives to ANTICIPATE the media.. and have a GAMEPLAN. In this case.. it seems nobody has one. Not even Favre himself.
