MEDIA TRAINING: Eight Questions to Help Your Next Interview

ANTICIPATE the Questions
If there’s one word I’d suggest to keep in mind when it comes to interviews… it’s “anticipate.”  There’s nothing worse than being stumped and it’s certainly not a good feeling to walk away feeling like you left a poor impression.

I say it with regularity… “before you go screaming for more media attention, or pouting about why you don’t get more…. think about what you’ve done with your most recent opportunity.”

Preparation is darned important.  And while I’m not suggesting you come across scripted or rehearsed, it sure does pay off to have an idea of what you want to say or how you’ll react to questions that may be coming.

In spending time with athletes… and now a lot of professional golfers… here are eight questions I toss their way.  These questions are for their own private time.  They are questions to think about and questions that should help the way they shape their answers and form a media game plan.
What Will YOU Say?

     * What are your goals - as an athlete or player?
     * What are your goals – as a person or professional?
     * What is the (your name) brand you’d like to stand for?
     * What do you most want people to know about you?
     * Are you open to the media or generally closed off?
     * Have you thought about how the media can grow you?
     * Is your league more than just a “playing ground” and how
       can you take advantage?
     * Now, what's YOUR "media message?"

When it comes to interviews, most people think only of the questions people ask of them.  I would argue that the most important questions are those we ask of ourselves.

Most don’t like to share private goals, and I’m not suggesting you need to.  But if you think about what it is you’d like to accomplish professionally or personally… and have an answer… you’ll then be able to think about how the media can help you get there.

There isn’t a company out there that isn’t craving attention and the opportunity to share its story in hopes of exposure and growth.  Now it’s time you do the same.

Thanks for following along as this blog continues to grow.  I welcome your comments … post them below, share your stories, suggest topics.  And you can also share your feedback by following me on Twitter @KraigKann

Thought for the Day:  Don’t be quick to criticize the media.  Think instead about how it can help you, and how you can use every opportunity to create more.
