COMMUNICATION & SOCIAL MEDIA : Importance of a Following

If life is truly about “leadership”… then isn’t successful leadership built around a "following?"

Do You Have One?
I believe it is.  Getting those around you to follow your lead is as important as what you’re working to accomplish.  Do something special and build a network of supporters following your efforts.

In social media… a “following” is everything.  Today’s marketing is completely different in all lines of work.  Phone calls, billboards and marketing kits are ancient efforts to create a dedicated client base.  Our goal at the LPGA is to enhance our platform, grow our fan base and create a larger following.  We’re no different than other businesses.  Finding ways to be different... growing our network of supporters.

Today, if you don’t have a worthy communications message, it’s probably just somebody’s spam.  And a worthy message must be communicated across new lines.  Those who have something special to sell aren’t always successful.  Those who sell themselves best are the ones who win.

Author Jeffrey Gitomer – “Social Boom” questions the importance of money as the main source of being noticed.  As he says, the new currency is quickly becoming “attention” – and that alone is what drives the majority of social media.

Jump on Board - It's Exploding

To me, he’s right.  Everyone wants attention for their successes and everyone who achieves success wants to build upon that and grow.  To do that – you need people who follow your lead and those folks to spread the word about your success.

Here are 5 thoughts about social media to keep in mind if you want to grow your following

   1.  At its core, social media means “being social”… don’t tell people what you’re doing. Share what you’re doing; tell people about what you’re doing.  There’s a difference

   2.  Have a “value message.”  If you don’t provide things people care about or don’t share enough details about you or your cause, you’re nothing more than spam and you certainly won't grow a following.  Value messages create interest and inspire people to go tell others.

   3. Social media means sharing.  And sharing  involves a strong level of trust and adds credibility to your brand if you’re taking it seriously.  Share what you feel good about, and what you'll feel good about if it goes to multiple outlets.

   4. If you’re working to create in individual brand, identify what you are all about.  Find out and identify what makes you unique among the many others “sharing” in social media.  Then build upon what makes you special.

    5. Social media takes work and a consistent message.  The more you offer, the more  impactful the message.  The less you offer, the less likely anyone notices... and the less  chance that anyone remembers it was you as the communicantor.

Which One is for YOU?
In short, those who reach success, create opportunities.  Opportunities come from sharing what makes you special.  Sharing creates a following.  But as it grows, don’t slow down.  There are so many platforms out there.  Figure out which one suits your strengths.  Is it Tiwtter?  YouTube?  Facebook?

If you want to get noticed, be better at what you do than others in your field and make sure your message is worth selling.  The rest is all about the effort you put into your social media “brand.”

Line of the Day: What does your social media effort say about you?  Take time to figure that out.  Once you do, you’ll be able to figure out what it can do for you.
