On the way home from "Bunkerville"... otherwise known as Whistling Straits. The week started with heavy amounts of fog that put the PGA CHAMPIONSHIP in delay-mode from the get-go. And it ended with all of us trying to see through a cloud of controversy thicker than the fog we started with.
Martin Kaymer is a wonderful player. He's won 5 tournaments in Europe, and now has fimished in the top 10 in 4 of the last 5 majors. In Germany, he's golf's version of Boris Becker or Michael Schumacher. Today, he's gone from heralded to hero in his homeland.
But everyone is trying to make sense of Dustin Johnson's plight. Yes, he grounded his club in the sand. Yes, he should have known it was treated like a bunker. His caddie should have been his check while his emotions had caused him to lose his mental balance. Yes, the PGA of America official should done a little more. In the end, everyone's to blame in some regard.
The best to come out of it is sportsmanship. Taken to another level by Dustin Johnson who - despite a less than dynamic personality - handled himself with class and the press with polish. And you thought Detroit Tiger pitcher Armando Galaraga and umpire Jim Joyce handled things well!
Today I talked with Johnson's manager David Winkle... who said he was overwhelmed with the number of emails and text messages trumpeting DJ's handling of the situation.
At HTK MEDIA Consulting, we do media training for athletes and one of the biggest tips is the following:
"DON'T DUCK THE PRESS IN TIMES OF CRISIS"
Point being that if you handle the trouble head-on and do your best with the questions that come, you'll get more positive publicity because of it than you'll ever get when things are going great. Admit things are tough, handle it with class and it all comes back to you in more ways than you can imagine.
Today, Johnson was making the rounds on talk radio and handling things with the same straight-up attitude he did on Sunday night. Way to go Dustin. Dustin Johnson won in every way but the trophy. And those will come soon enough!
