Here we are today at the PGA Championship... and the front page of the Milwaukee papers are actually focused more on last night's Green Bay Packers pre-season game against the Cleveland Browns.
If Tiger or Phil was in the mix... Lambeau Field would have taken a backseat to Whistling Straits. But Tiger - despite being 3-under to start the day - has been "Whistling Crooked."
Through 3 rounds this championship has been centered around a few lesser talked about players... and a few rising stars.
Matt Kuchar had the lead going to round three... but the "Catch Kuch" campaign caught legs and he was passed by Nick Whatney and a few others. Sunday will be Sunday... more pressure, more potential to think ahead instead of thinking in the present.
In golf, we love charisma as much as control. I sat through a few interviews yesterday.. and couldn't help but wish that Nick Watney and Dustin Johnson had what Kuchar has in terms of media presence. A bit stiff, and staring a bit too straight ahead... both guys could probably help their games with a little more of a relaxed game in front of the cameras and microphones.
In our Media Training seminars, we work to relax the player before the questions about pressure start coming. Control the environment... don't let others control you. Anticipate the questions... laugh a bit, smile a lot. Show more personality than game and you'll have more fans than you know.
Who knows who wins.. when it happens.. please guys... let the chair rock back and relax a little bit. Embrace the publicity... and the people will follow!
