Networking from a Sports Television Network Perspective

Okay.... today I received a link to a press release about yours truly and the company I founded earlier this year.  Cambridge Who's Who... is obviously something a lot of people know about.  And quite a few of you are probably in it yourselves.

Kraig Kann - Tabbed By Cambridge Who's Who

Obviously, I am glad to be a part of this.  It beats the alternative when you consider the number of influential people around the country who can use this for business contacts.  I've read a few books lately... about finding a way to be "indispensable" in the workplace, about "connecting" in the social media environment and about "swimming with the sharks" in a tough sales environment.
Every book I read today about business emphasizes the importance of networking.  Most feel that any job you get comes from a relationship you might have with somebody... and not always the resume you've got with a cover letter attached.
Sell yourself at every opportunity.  Those aren't my words... but I'm sure buying it.  I've been very fortunate over the years to work with a lot of great people, and be a part of something in the Golf Channel.. that has allowed me to reach out and be with a lot of important people.  Those are the memories I'll take with me no matter where I go or what I do.
So the next time somebody introduces you to somebody... do something that's really hard to do..... remember their name, and what they do.  It might just help you.
Today's athletes at the college level could do a lot to learn from this principle.  We all know (even if they don't) that the smallest of percentages actually reach the professional ranks and superstar status.  In the end.. the networking they do with influential people around them can pay off handsomely years down the road.
I went to the University of Missouri.  I graduated from the Journalism School... which has a reputation that's carried on for years.  People who do what I do are referred to as "The Mizzou Mafia"... and with good reason.  We help each other out... and we create work opportunities years after school days passed us by.
I'd never be as lucky as I am without the people I've met along the way... so my advice... take it or leave it... is to meet and greet with a smile at every opportunity.
